Hollywood Park--country living inside San Antonio

I will start this blogging endeavor with a description of my own neighborhood, Hollywood Park.

Hollywood Park is a separate town within San Antonio located west of Hwy 281 at Thousand Oaks/Mecca and south of Hwy 1604 at Voight. It borders another small town, Hill Country Village, on its south border and west border. Hollywood Park has approximately 3000 residents and has its own police station, fire department, and city hall.

Hollywood Park was incorporated in 1955 and was a rural community back then--San Antonio grew up and surrounded it in later years. As such, the lot size in Hollywood Park is generally larger than in most San Antonio neighborhoods. Most of the lots in Hollywood Park are between 1/2 acre and 1 acre, although there are a few lots as small as 1/3 acre and several over 1 acre.

Most of the houses in the southern part of Hollywood Park are ranches that were originally built in the 1950's and 1960's. Many of these have been updated or completely renovated, although some are a lot closer to their original state. Until recently, there were open lots in Hollywood Park--most, but not all of those have been built out in the past few years. The houses in the northern section of Hollywood Park were mostly built in the 1980s, although many of these have been renovated and updated as well.

One of the things Hollywood Park is best known for is deer. Many deer can be found wandering around the Hollywood Park and Hill Country Village area at any time of day. Visitors are often amazed to see deer wandering freely through yards and down the streets of Hollywood Park. The one downside to all the deer is that they eat landscaping if it is not carefully planned. Most local nurseries have lists of "deer resistant" plants likely to escape being eaten by the Hollywood Park deer. In recent years, the Town of Hollywood Park has attempted to control the deer population by trapping some of the deer and relocating it to more rural areas.

Hollywood Park has a vibrant HOA and a great community center, located at the end of El Portal Drive. The community center includes a pool (with a swim team in the summer), playground, two tennis courts and a meeting hall. There is also a playing field with a baseball diamond on the corner of Mecca and El Cerrito. The HOA plans seasonal events that have good participation, including an Easter Egg Hunt, Halloween Party, and Fourth of July parade. There is a monthly neighborhood newsletter.

The public schools which currently service Hollywood Park are North East ISD's Hidden Forest Elementary, Bradley Middle School, and Churchill High School.

Hollywood Park is good for many commuters because it has direct access to Hwy 281 from Mecca Dr. and Donella Dr., and to Hwy 1604 from Voight Dr. Being located south of Hwy 1604 also cuts down on traffic time for those commuting toward downtown or the south side.

There is a wealth of shopping nearby Hollywood Park, including two HEB grocery stores within 2 miles of the Park. Some nearby restaurants include Chester's Hamburgers, The Egg and I, Freddy's Frozen Custard and Taco Cabana for casual meals, and Bin 555 for more upscale dining.

Please feel free to contact me if you need any information about Hollywood Park or if you are looking to buy or sell a home in San Antonio. I would love to work with you!

San Antonio Neighborhoods

Hi, and welcome to my blog, San Antonio Neighborhoods. My name is Carole Tubbesing, and I am a Realtor with the Phyllis Browning Company here in San Antonio. My husband and I first moved to the San Antonio area in 1996 from Chicago.

Like many San Antonio residents, we moved here due to job relocation--the Air Force in our case. Coming to Texas and San Antonio from out of state, we were not sure what to expect. Like many in our situation, we had a limited amount of time to research the different areas of San Antonio with respect to commute, amentities, price and schools before needing to make a buying decision. It was nerve wracking to say the least!

My husband and I have fallen in love with San Antonio and have made it our permanent home. This city has so much to offer in terms of culture, great weather for year round activity, restaurants, festivals, and more. The housing is generally affordable. The public schools here are very strong, and there are many good private school options as well. We can't think of a better place to raise a family.

I've started this blog to share information on various San Antonio neighborhoods and the things they have to offer families: schools, proximity to shopping, commute times, and just some general information about things that turn a house and neighborhood into a home and community. I plan to profile a different neighborhood each week. Please feel free to suggest neighborhoods that you would like to learn more about, or give me extra info I may have missed on the neighborhoods I've covered. Hope this is helpful to people considering moving to San Antonio, and to San Antonio residents who want to learn more about their community!

Please feel free to contact me if you need any information about the San Antonio area or if you are looking to buy or sell a home in San Antonio. I would love to work with you!
